12 Elephants and Cultural Dinner and Show
What a nice, however touristy, time we had at a Cultural Dinner and Show with Carl and Laurie another couple who were visiting from the US. Traditional dances and special Thai foods.
We enjoyed the Elephant show the next day immensely. (pun intended) These huge pachyderms are amazing. We were able to get up close and personal. I’ll put up a short video on YouTube. What a kick.. We bought a bunch of the little bananas and a bundle of sugar cane which an elephant would reach out to take and toss into his mouth. They would take their trainers staw hat off and place it on our heads and tap it down with their trunk! A very strange feeling.
After eating they walked a few yards to the river where they were bathed. How darling to see them lie down to be scrubbed and enjoy the cool water. The most interesting and dirtiest job was done by several people standing down stream a few feet with plastic laundry baskets. With one basket they would catch the floating “debris” and after the water drained they would transfer the remains to the other basket. It’s reported that they make about $50 a day just on poop. You can buy Elephant Dung paper in the gift shop. How great it that!!?
There was a show in the area with a dozen elephants with a game of soccer, throwing darts at balloons and even painting pictures. Quite entertaining. We stopped at an orchid and butterfly garden on our way home. The day was a nice break to learn a bit about the culture of Thailand.
Tomorrow we’ll be taking a long trip up into the hill tribes in the jungles. We’re looking forward to meeting Titus’ family.
God bless you with a good day.
