33 Praise the Lord, His mercies endure forever
Our meandering through the countryside is so refreshing to our souls and enlightening to our eyes as we drive through ‘waves of amber grain’ and under ‘spacious skies’ us love and appreciate our America even more.
Henna tassels on ripening corn fields look as soft as the hair of a pretty little redhead we met along the way. We can tell we’re going through an Amish area as there is an absence of power lines, no motor vehicles and the hay is stacked in little pyramids in the field. I think of Little Boy Blue fast asleep under the hay stack while the cows are in the corn and the sheep in the meadow who was to blow his horn. Since the weather is unseasonably cool and rainy I didn’t spot him!
We were amazed at how life takes interesting turns. Our friends in Appleton sold their large dairy farm about the same time that we bought our five and half acre farm in California… for half the price. If we had known and bought here we think of how different our lives would have been. But you know what they say about farms… ‘keep putting money into it until you are broke.’ Almost like having a boat! We loved our farming years but sure didn’t make any money, what with dogs killing our sheep and egg money barely covering the cost of feed during the laying season. I’m still spinning wool from our flock and knitting but that is for fun and not profit.
Ron’s grandfather was a farmer in Wisconsin and a pioneer who helped establish the counties in this Indian land. We spent some time at the courthouse going over plat maps and deeds. Always an interesting study.
