8 Those with the big tarps have it figured out
Here we are in a drippy forest under trees reaching the heavens. We are on Whidbey Island of Washington state. Deception Pass is gorgeous with views of water through the evergreens. When we arrived yesterday the sun was shining and bright.
Our breath was taken as we drove over the bridge to this state park. Reminds us of Yosemite with redwood and fir trees fighting for the sun with others of unknown variety. We located our little space, backed in and here we are, part of God’s creation.

We made our first stop to empty and fill up. This little hut holds only so much water… one way or another. We’re now ready for another week out ‘dry camping’. That means no electricity, no water outside just dependant on propane tanks, a battery and a holding tank for water. We’re enjoying hook ups here.

Ron says we’re in training for convalescent home days!! The biggest difference would be the size of the bathroom. This one… let’s see… pretend you are in the bathroom of a very small plane. I have to enter facing the right direction or get out and turn around. There is a shower head hooked on the wall for, yes, showering. With towel on the floor in front of the kitchen sink, open the door, strip down, step in with soap in one hand and wash cloth in the other. Point the shower handle away (which it doesn’t do so I need remove it first) (how many hands do I need?) Wet down, soap up and rinse off. Setting the soap on the toilet seat and hoping it doesn’t slip away is the tricky part.
Now repeat the process… step out into the warm (if the heater is working) room (I use the term lightly) on to the dish towel (if Ron hasn’t picked it up off the floor… a first!) Grab the bath towel where I hung it over a cabinet door, dry off, getting my feet twisted up in the towel on the floor. Whew… what a chore and almost worth it! I’ve only done it once but after almost a week without I think it was needed.
Back to the big tarps. As we’ve gone for our walks between rain spells we noticed how many folks have tarps up. We didn’t put up our awning as it was so nice and sunny yesterday. Guess we totally forgot we are in Washington state AND on an island to boot. So during the night a little tap, tap, tap became a slap, slap, slap then a down pour.
Today there are happy campers huddled around their camp fires, under their tarps.. one group has a tarp probably 30 ft. by 30 ft. if not larger.. it’s tied to trees and their chairs surround it while they laugh and enjoy being dry! Next time.
More tonight… Love to each of you, Peggy and Ron
